Beachbreak
A sand bottom beach where waves generally approach straight in breaking closer to shore.

Beachcomber
Originally coined as defining a destitute or degraded individual who frequents a beach front. Sanitized more recently as being anyone enamored with spending time in or around the ocean. Also used occasionally in reference to a long sweeping wave characteristic of a point break.

Beat Down
Description of someone who has been worked, rag dolled by a wave or had their butt kicked on the beach for snaking someone once too often.

Beater
A well used (loved) surf vehicle that's characterized by melted wax on the dash, seats or in the carpet and generally emits a musty swell from a stale wetsuit or other surf gear.

Beavertail
Early wetsuit design in the '70s with a large flap affixed to the suit's lower back, wrapped under the crotch and secured in front. Designed to hold the suit in place, the innovation didn't really work and surfers took to letting the slab dangle. (Hence the term, "tail".)

Beef
A problem or situation where someone is pissed at another. The issue at hand that causes turmoil is called a "beef."

Bennie
A tanless tourist on the beach. Long ago, doctors believed the rays of the sun were 'beneficial' to ones health, thus 'Benny' was born. Origin: New Jersey Shore.

Benny
Descriptive abbreviation for people from Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and NY. Today, a "Benny" is someone from the Northern NJ or NYC area who is loud, obnoxious, disrespectful to the beach and locals and wears gold chains.

Bent
A poorly executed and often painful conclusion to a ride. "If you're not careful, you can really get bent." Props to Bruce Brown.

Betty
Used by surfers to describe a good looking Wahine or group of Wahines. Originally derived from Wilma on The Flintstones cartoon.

Bitchin'
First used by surfers in the '50s to signify something was cool, top-notch, excellent.

Black Shorts
1970s group of North Shore locals that were at odds with up and coming surfers, Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, Ian Cairns, Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson and Michael Tomson. The group evolved into what is known today as Da Hui.

Blank
The original block of foam used to shape a surfboard. A blank often comes from a pre-shaped mold with a basic outline and rocker depending on the length and type surfboard being shaped. Usually made from polyurethane foam.

Blasted
What a wave does to someone when it unloads and works, rag dolls or otherwise drills a surfer.

Blindstitched
Seam that's glued together, then sewn halfway through the material so you don't see the stitching on the other side; generally on higher-end suits and considered flexible, fairly watertight and durable.

Blistered
To pull off a bit of an Oliver McCrevice while pig dogging backside in an inverted tunnel/tube.

Blow Out Your Squeaker Dude, just relax. Your going to blow out your squeaker.
What you say to someone who is hyperventilating and begins to panic after surfacing from a really long hold down.

Blown Air Fakey
A 360 degree turn that's not even close to being made. Generally claimed to have been pulled off by a "Nocon." Usually nobody was in the water at the time it occurred and the surfer has never done a solid turn on their board before. Generally this individual never actually paddles out but has tall tales about his surfing adventures.

Blown Out
A surf condition caused by strong onshore winds, which create ugly chop on the wave faces and through the lineup. Generally considered unridable.

Boogieboard (Bodyboard)
A small soft foam board used primarily with swim fins, and ridden prone (occasionally drop knee). Originated with the Morey Boogie-board invented by Tom Morey in the 70's.

Bluebird
A day that is perfectly blue, with no clouds in sight.
