H2O
The chemical symbol for water - the lifeblood of surfers.

Hack
A drastic and sudden change of direction executed by a surfer. Similar to a hard, carving cutback.

Haggard
Rad, chronic, awesome, bodacious. Just 100 percent cool intense surf.

Hairy
Occurrence where one finds himself in engaged in a situation that could turn gnarly at any second. Think of the drop at Pipe...that's hairy.

Hammered
When a big wave breaks right on top of you...you get hammered.

Hang Loose
Being in a relaxed metabolic and clear minded state. Inverse application of up Tight, Circa '60s.

Hang ten

A longboarding maneuver where the surfer hangs ten toes of both feet over the tip or front of the surfboard.
(Hanging five is also possible.)

Hangin'
An occurrence whereby one just...stays put. Generally conveys a genuine state of content.

Haole
An ancient Hawaiian greeting where one would come face-to-face with another and offer an expression of "ha," by the expelling of breath. The literal translation of ha is "the breath of life." It was a way to give of oneself and show another a deep sense of love and respect. When foreigners first came to Hawaii, they did not exhibit this same respect for others. They were called haole, ha-ole, meaning "without ha."

Hard core

Extremely dedicated surfing or committed to the surfing lifestyle.

Hardrail
A sharper/thinner edge of a surfboard. Notable on performance shortboards.

Harpooning
To cop wood while surfing.

Haymaker
A large rogue wave that forms outside the line-up and pummels unsuspecting surfers in it's path; clean-up wave.


Head Dip
Longboard trick whereby the rider briefly dips his head into the wave while riding.

Head High
When measuring the from the back of the wave, the wave height is as tall as a grown man's head (head to toe).

Hectic The video was hectic, Bru!
Something that's radical, extreme, etc.

Heenalu
Hawaiian for riding a surfboard; surfing; which literally translates as wave sliding.

Height vs. Period
A selection tab on Surfline's LOLA swell model, which offers a look at the amount of energy or wave height within each swell period band. Very effective to see how much longer period energy is in a swell, and also good to spot early long swell period forerunner energy which precedes a swell.

Hela The lineup was hella zood today.
Derived from "hell of a lot". Used in place of very, really, a lot, etc.

Helm-Buff
Someone who surfs so bad, even after many years of trying, but still continues to be motivated just from the pure stoke of being out there.

Hemo-ed
When something has been "hemo-ed", it's been demolished beyond repair.

Henna
Early 80s slang meaning "you think so?" Usually used after a sentence when you're talking to someone you know well. Example: "That guy just caught some major air! henna?" or "That beach bunny is totally hot! Henna?"

Herky-Jerky
The motion or body movement exhibited by a less than fluid surfer.


Hiddie
Derivative of hideous or particularly intense situation, maneuver or wave.

High Pressure
A high pressure system is an area of relative pressure maximum that has diverging winds and a rotation opposite to the earth is rotation. Fair weather is typically associated with high pressure.
